Today I made the desicion, to go to Fiesch, fairly late. However the conditions where much better than I hoped for. The base was not as high as in the last flights, but still respectable. After the take off I quickly got to 2900 Meters and began to fly towards the Grimsel. The valley of 'Goms' worked well, about 1/8 cumulis, good and reliable thermals, a little weak in lower altitudes though. At the 'Siedelhorn' I flew to the 'Totensee' (a little lake on top of the Grimsel pass) and then turned around. Since I drove with my car to Fiesch, I did not want to continue east in the direction of Andermatt-Disentis, even though I did think it would be the better choice. Flying back to Fiesch war more difficult, the West / Southwest wind got stronger and slowed me down. Also the thermals where more difficult and bumpier. After I could not gain much height at Bellwald I decided after the crossing to the Eggishorn to turn and land in Fiesch. Specially after the sky was getting covered in a large, milky layer of cirrus.
Flown distance : ~50 km |
Kurt Fischer with his Nova Artax beneath me, shortly after I took this picture, he made me look old: I had no chance to keep up with the Artax. My old X-Ray had by far not the glideratia nor the speed to keep up :-(.
