Take off a few minutes before 11 o'clock. Fairly quickly I get to the cloud base at 2600 meters and follow Urs Herzog up the main valley. At the next thermal I have problems to center in the turbulent and unreliable thermal. The 50 meters which Urs arrived higher seem to make all the difference. I finally turn and fly back to the first thermal in front of the launch. Now I have more luck and fly fairly fast down the 'Unterengadin' in direction of Martina. The thermals get better and more reliable by the minute. I know now where to find the thermal above Pfunds and fly a more direct line than yesterday. The thermal is rough, but I quickly gain altitude, so do not mind. Next crossing. The fun starts. It is roughm very rough. I need my whole concentration to keep my Nove X-Ray open and above me. The thermal peeks at 7-8 meters/second and I reach the base very quickly. The few collapses have no influence on the climbrate. Unplesant. I fly on as fast as I can, hoping to get better (more relaxing) conditions. But no chance. The air is now really bumpy. I decide to fly a more direct route, since I do not want to keep too close to the mountain peeks in these conditions. It does'nt help. I get thrown around and the conditions are more than just 'sportive'. After about an hour I have enough and despite the very good cross country potential I decide to land. Ther is one important thing that is missing in these conditions: the fun!

Crossing the border to Austria near Martina.
Shortly before Landeck, can't see the turbulences though. |
